Um Punhado de Terra

Swamp. In the whole stage, twenty centimetres of clay ground. Comes, from the horizon to the proscenium, a black man. The feet sink in the mud. The man limps from the right leg. The man come, slowly. Arrives to the proscenium. And says: Take my body lord of fire! Come and destroy this foreign land!
This black man is a slave brought by force from Africa to a land that never heard - Portugal.
He will tell us, in a badly learn Portuguese, but with powerful images and in a poetic singular language, as a traditional african story teller, how one day arrived to his village the “ugly white men, with metal heads and iron skin, above the skin spoiled milk colour”.
How they kill his wife, kids and friends, how they destroy his village and annihilated his people. How they were taken, under the orders of a so called “the infant”, in a big boat bigger than “wood mountains” to this relegation lands.
Is so his loneliness and his sadness that the black man, stripped out of his slice of land, will evoke and will ask to the gods the death and curse of the foreigners and their descendants, responsible by his misfortune and destruction of his people.
And, is still with foreign land that the black man says goodbye, from his life and his land.

“The black man catches soil from the ground and eats. / Again catches soil. Eats. / The black man eats the land. / Eats, eats…”
